Regulation will arrive. Governments are slow but not blind. When an AI agent makes a costly, public mistake at a major company – and it will – regulation follows. Smart businesses will build compliance frameworks in now.

The skills gap will be enormous. Everyone will want agents. Almost nobody will know how to build them well. If you’re learning this now, you’re early. That matters more than most people realise.

How to Start Without Overcommitting

If you’ve read this far and you’re thinking about trying agents in your business, here’s my honest advice:

Pick one task. Not a workflow, not a department, not a “transformation initiative.” One task. Something you do daily that is boring, structured, and low-risk if it goes wrong. Follow-up emails. Social monitoring. Report generation. Content formatting.

Build the simplest version that could work. Your first agent should take a weekend to build. If it’s taking longer, the task is too complex. Pick something simpler and use an existing framework.

Run it alongside a human for two weeks. Don’t replace anyone. Run the agent in shadow mode – it does the work, a human reviews the output. This builds trust and catches problems before they cost you anything real.

Measure everything. Time saved. Quality of output. Error rate. Cost per run. You need data to decide whether to expand. Gut feelings are not a strategy.

Then – and only then – expand. Once your first agent is running reliably, pick the next task. Build slowly. Each new agent teaches you something about how these systems behave in your specific context.

The companies that win with AI agents won’t be the ones that moved fastest. They’ll be the ones that moved most deliberately. Speed without direction is just expensive chaos.

Start small. Measure relentlessly. Expand deliberately. That is the entire strategy. Everything else is noise.

The Bottom Line

AI agents are real. They work. They’re already changing how I run my businesses, and they will change yours too – eventually. But the gap between “AI agents exist” and “AI agents work reliably in my business” is bigger than most people appreciate.

The technology isn’t the hard part. The hard part is designing the right workflows, building the right infrastructure, setting the right constraints, and having the patience to iterate when things go sideways. It’s engineering discipline applied to a new category of software – no different in that respect from anything else that’s ever been built.

I’m genuinely bullish on agents. My entire business strategy is built around them at this point. But I’m also realistic about where we are: early adopter territory. Things break, costs are higher than they’ll eventually be, and best practices are still being worked out in public.

If you’re willing to tolerate that ambiguity and put in the work, now is the right time to start. If you need something polished and plug-and-play, give it another year.

Either way, this is happening. The only question is whether you’re building the future or waiting for someone else to hand it to you.
